Final World Series post and some wins to showcase

The World Series is over, and as I stated on my Facebook and Twitter, while I hoped for a different result, I can't complain about the game.  Since I don't want to rewrite everything I wrote after the game, here is a screenshot from my facebook.

As a result of watching the World Series, I've fell behind on a lot of things.  I still have some packages I need to finish getting together and sending out (Julie is first on my list since she kindly sent me a package I will show off soon).  I also fell behind on my catalogging and hopefully I will start doing that again soon.  I'm thinking I will on Sunday or so since I have a busy next few days.  Since I haven't been catalogging and still bidding on stuff on Listia, I got a couple wins in the mail that now I'm not sure I needed.  Well one of them I knew I needed but the other was so cheap I couldn't pass it up.  I will show them off today.

First is the complete team set of 1991 Upper Deck.  I think its complete, the auction said it was, and I can't argue because I didn't look to see (another reason I need to finish catalogging). Anyways, I decided not to scan all the cards, but just a few.  Of course I needed to include Mr. Royal, George Brett.  I also showed off the Bo Jackson because I like how he looks in the powder blues.  I liked Jeff Conine growing up, so I decided to scan his card.  The Bret Saberhagen card made me laugh for some reason.  I think its the shades.  I threw in the Bob Boone card for only one reason.  Is that the Marlins fan in the background?  I know the Marlins wasn't even a team in 1991, but that dude is everywhere!  It's not crazy to think he would show up on a baseball card wearing team colors for a team that didn't exist and didn't even use red as a team color until just recently.

I guess its a spring training game against the Cardinals but its cool to think its Marlins Man.

Next up was an interesting package.  Not interesting like a bomb squad had to be called in, but interesting because of the cards I got.  I won an auction for a Joe Randa card, one which I knew I didn't have.  When I opened the package I saw the Joe Randa card seen in the photo above.  It also included the Kurt Stillwell card pictured.  I am not the biggest fan of the Topps Bigs cards or whatever they are called, but it was nice to get this card, and I have a few, so I guess I should work on finishing the team set at some point, but not in a real rush.

I also got these cards too.  Another Joe Randa, which is another one I needed, and it reminded me how much I liked the design of this set.  The Davies card I'm not sure if I had, I seemed to have a lot of cards from that year, on of the better ones in recent years. The Jim Eisenreich card is one I don't think I have, but I need to check.

After looking at the cards I had to log onto Listia to see if it mentioned bonus cards.  It didn't so this was a nice surprise. This is the second time I've won an auction on Listia that the seller threw in bonus cards.  I can't complain about that.  I have a couple more pacakges I should be getting soon, and also have quite a few auctions I'm watching, so I should be winning more cards soon.

Another reason I got backed up on sorting my cards is because I've been going through some stuff and yesterday I came across some cards I forgot about.

I guess they are called cards, some might call them discs.  I just know I'm not quite sure how to display them.  I'd like to put them in a binder, but don't think I have sleeves to fit them in.

The Taystee ones are similar to the Bo Jackson one I scanned a while back (I think I showed it off, I know I scanned it).  I would imagine with Bo, Brett, Frank, and Bret (this one with only one t) that this set could be near completion.  They were part of my dad's collection (as is most of my older cards since I sold my collection in 2004).  Looking at these, it would be cool to use these to make a Royals display and these could be an outline, almost how they have lights outlining a movie poster.  I might have to find some more and create a project.

The last one isn't a Taystee one, but Kitty Clover.  I'm not even sure what that is, but its cool to have.  It's the only one I have, but I should look into if they made more.

That will wrap it up for today, but hope to have more posts the next few days.  I have another set of cards I found, and also the aforementioned package from Julie, plus since the baseball season is over, I will start showing more Mizzou stuff.  Since I plan on going to the football game Saturday, I am starting to get pumped for football finally (though I know its half over).  The Mizzou basketball team had an exhibition last night, so I'll be posting about them soon too.

In The Air Tonight

What better way to prepare for tonight's game seven then some Nonpoint?  Sure, I could have gone with Phil Collins, but I really like this version.  Sorry about skipping last night, I got sidetracked and by the time I had time, the game started.  Though I found some stuff yesterday that I am going to post now.  What I really wanted to post I couldn't find, but once I do, I will show it off.  In the meantime, here's what I did find.

I bought this book for a quarter (as the tag implies) a couple years ago at a second hand store.  It was cool because it showed all the Topps cards of the Royals from their first year until 1987, the time of publishing.  They made some for most of the other teams too.  I like how Surf sponsored these (or maybe just this one) books.

I HAVE A GEORGE BRETT ROOKIE!  Well, on paper I guess I do.  One day I will have the real deal in my hands, but for now, this will be good enough.

Aw yes, the 1985 cards.  The team that went all the way.  I'm still proud of them winning it all in 1985, but if for no other reason, I want the Royals to win tonight, just so I don't have to hear that brought up again.  To me the fact that they haven't won since 1985 isn't the tidbit that needs to be said.  It was the fact they hadn't made the PLAYOFFS since 1985 that was more important.  Anyways, I would love to see a new edition of these books made, but with all the inserts in the card sets, it would be too much.  Maybe if they just did the base sets, it could work.


I almost forgot, I made money on this book!  In the back of the book is a coupon saving 50 cents on Surf!  The best part?  NO EXPIRATION DATE!  It would be kind of cool to try using this (that is if they still make Surf), just to see the cashiers face, and the company when it is turned in.  Though since the book is in great condition, I have no intention of cutting it out.


I also found something else of interest from yesteryear to show off.

It's not like it was a holy grail item, but I finally found it.  It was tough to scan the inside, so next time I might just take pictures.  It is one of my favorite pieces I have, and hope to add ones from 1980 and 2014 to the collection.  I also want to get the ALCS, ALDS, and Wild Card ones too from this year.

I think some people might remember the first name there.  I still don't get the grief he got for that.  Especially after all these years.  I know it was a bad call, and maybe that instilled some confidence in the Royals, but the Royals also were on the wrong side of a bad call earlier in the game, and after this event, the safe runner never scored.  In fact, I think he was still the first out.  Any blame on the loss should have been to the catcher and first basemen who couldn't catch a foul ball while facing the next better.  Sorry, off on a tangent, but someone brought it up last night (a sports reporter of all people).

Anyways, let's look at an ad from the program.

BOOM! While I don't drink, I must say I really enjoy beer advertisements.  I like ads in general, but beer ads are really hit and miss.  Not too many are great, but there are some flashes of genius.

OK, back to other stuff inside the program.

HEY PEDRO, GUESS WHAT MAN, I MADE THE ROOSTER! (A little Major League II humor). Nice way to show how the Royals got to the '85 Series.

Nice to see a picture of the late Ewing Kauffman!  Also of the late Dick Howser and Dan Quisenberry.  After Howser's death, it almost seemed like a curse to the team. 

Also in the picture is Bret Saberhagen, who will be throwing out the first pitch tonight!  I hope they show that on TV!

Before I go, I have a couple more things to show off, one is my paper ticket from the game I went to this year.  I would love to make more games, but I was happy to go this year, and I can't thank my friend enough for the birthday present.

I still prefer a hard ticket over the paper ones, but if it works, this is still good to have as a souvenir.  I wish I took better care of it though.

Finally I have this gem.  In a few days, Ned Yost's hunting buddy will be so happy to have his friend back for the offseason.

R.I.P. to the people we lost this weekend

Last night was not a good night.  The Royals lost and now are on the brink of elimination, but it was an afterthought to me.  As I settled down to enjoy the game, I checked out twitter as I always do before a game to see the latest buzz.  Aaron Lewis did a less than stellar job on the National Anthem so that gave me something to look at before first pitch.

Then sometime in the first inning, my cousin tweeted something that seemed out of place.  He's a huge Royals fan like me but also likes the Cardinals.  He tweeted "Wow. In utter disbelief right now. Thoughts and prayers go out to Oscar Taveras' family and loved ones. May he rest in peace."

WHAT?  Then as he usually does, he retweeted a lot of stuff.  To me the game just stopped.  I started looking for news reports and confirmation but couldn't find any.  Was this another Twitter death hoax?

Sadly, it wasn't.  Within minutes reports surfaced, and One of only a few Cardinals players I liked had died.  Don't get me wrong, its always sad when someone passes away, but it tugs at you a little more when you know them personally or if they are famous, someone you are a fan of.

I was a fan of Oscar Taveras.  With him and Kolten Wong, I was seriously thinking of rooting for St. Louis on occasion.  A youth movement had started to come and I was starting to get behind it.  This is the third unexpected death of a current Cardinals player in a little over a decade, Josh Hancock in 2007, and Darryl Kile in 2002.

I don't always agree with Cardinals fans, but one thing we did agree on was his potential.  While everyone was gushing over Yasiel Puig, Taveras was slowly building a fanbase in St. Louis that was starting to spread.  Fans nationwide got a glimpse of him during the NLCS where he hit a home run in game two, the only win of the series for St. Louis.

After hearing the news I was devastated.  Really the game on TV just became noise.  It didn't even matter that the Giants took a 1-0 lead.  I wanted to make sure a friend of mine was aware of the news because she is a big Cardinals fan.  We have even been making jabs at each other during the World Series because she essentially hates the Royals.  There was none of that last night, teasing and jabs took a backseat as Cardinal Nation, baseball fans, and the World lost a player far too soon at only 22.

A couple on innings later, my head was still out of it, and I was on Facebook (during a typical game, I only check social media between innings or when its not a close game), and noticed someone else I was a fan of passed away.

Marcia Strassman was Mrs. Kotter on Welcome Back, Kotter.  While the show was a little before my time, thanks to Nick At Night, I became a huge fan of the show.  So much so, that when I heard of her passing, most people my age would associate her as the mom on Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, I thought of her on Kotter.  Looking back at her career, she had a pretty good resume, including several appearances on MASH.  It just made me sadder.

Then I heard about the soccer player in South Africa that was shot and died.  While I have no idea who he was, it was still very sad.  This on top of hearing former NFL player Mo Collins passed away at 38.  I don't remember him, but its far too young for someone to pass away.

It didn't get better as I woke up this morning to check out the news, I have become accustomed to looking at the Wikipedia page of list of people who passed away, more so I can tell my mom, who doesn't get on the internet and sometimes misses stories about them in the newspaper.

In addition to those deaths and the bassist of Cream passing away a few days ago, I saw a couple other sports people passed away.  Pat McGlothin was a Brooklyn Dodgers pither in 1949 and 1950.  He only pitched 8 games , but it was still sad to hear of his passing only 4 days after he turned 94.

Then there was another pitcher who passed away, this one I have a few of his cards.  Jeff Robinson passed away as well.  Here is a story from the Detroit News that talks about him.

Overall it was just a horrible weekend for sports fans with all the news of death. Most of the time it seems sports picks us up when we are trying to forget about life and want to clear our minds.  This just shows the human element of sports and how it is just like everyday life.

World Series Game 5 Notes

Yikes, last night wasn't good.  However today is a new day, and a new game.  Here is the starting lineups for both teams for tonight.

Who is singing the National Anthem tonight?  Well if you're like me, "IT'S BEEN AWHILE" since you heard his name.  It's Aaron Lewis of Staind.

Finally the Kansas City Star posted an article earlier last week noting who some famous people you might see as fans at the games rooting for the Royals and the Giants.  They also forgot to add some more names, one of which I am a big fan of- Kevin Pollak, however he is rooting for the Giants.

While sometimes it seems celebs are trying to get screen time at major events, I think its cool to see passionate fans rooting for their team, it doesn't matter if they are famous or not.  I loved seeing Paul Rudd on the field after the ALCS win.  I got a laugh out of seeing Steve Perry singing along to Journey last night.  It shows they are just like us.

While my prediction could still come true (Royals in 6), I just hope for a better result than last night, and a win for Kansas City.  The Chiefs already won today, so let's keep the momentum going.

Gameday Post #3: Royal Report

Tonight with a 2-1 series lead, the Kansas City Royals invade AT&T Park  to try to get one step closer to a Championship!  With a stacked sports day, it will be interesting to see how many people tune in.  I think its a safe bet that Kansas City and San Francisco will be watching.

The National Anthem tonight will be an instrumental done by the one and only Carlos Santana, the musician, not the Cleveland Indians baseball player.  I'm not a big fan of Carlos but it should be better than the Little Big Town performance last night.  Let's hope that the mic works tonight (last night we missed half of God Bless America).

Here is tonight's Starting Lineups

 For the first time this postseason, I got a bit nervous last night.  Now it is starting to sink in that this is real.  It reminds me of Super Bowl XXXVII back in 2003.  At the time I was a huge Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, and I was so excited for the big game.  I also hated the Raiders so it was perfect.

The game was much like the Royals playoff run has been so far this year.  They have been in control for most of it, but it didn't really cink in until late in the game (or in this case the World Series), that my team really had a chance to win it.

I usually tend to root for the underdog teams throughout the year, but in the last few years my main focus has been down to the Royals in baseball, Chiefs in football, and Mizzou in college.  I follow the other sports, but have only kept up with them with no real team to root for (I do root for Michael Annett weekly in NASCAR despite lackluster performances).

My point in all of this is that I have been emotional a couple times this postseason (the Wild Card and ALDS clinchers), but now being only two wins away, I am starting to feel magic in the air.  I'm also second guessing my decision to not renew my subscription to the Kansas City Star a couple months ago.

If we win tonight, I may not show much emotion, but I will have everything in place for game 5 and record every second on pre and post game as I can (like I did for the Tampa SB), and can't wait to have it all on a disc.  I have all the postseason games and even found a few games from throughout the year, so I will be likely watching them all during the offseason.

Gameday Post #2: Meet the Tigers!

As I am listening to the Central Methodist Homecoming game (see previous post), I am also gearing up for two other major games today.  Next on the bill is the Missouri Tigers Homecoming game against the Vanderbilt Commodores.  I missed out on the parade and am not going to be at the game, but I have already seen many pictures and fan tweets and excitement is in the air.  I have the game set to record on the SEC Network, and plan on listening to the game as long as it doesn't interfere with  the World Series.

Mizzou Gameday

Next week, Missouri will be at home again to face the Kentucky Wildcats.  I plan on being at the game and hope to take a lot of pictures of the game, and of the stadium and such to give you guys an idea of the look and feel.  I'm planning on taking a walking tour of the campus again in the next year, and when I do, I will give more of a feel for the campus and some stories I have.

Let's see if they can pull this off.  The plan is to stripe the Stadium.

Gameday Post #1 Meet the Eagles

Today is Homecoming!  Besides Mizzou, another local University is celebrating today as well.  The Central Methodist Eagles play local rivals the Missori Valley Vikings.  I'm sure most of you have never heard of either team, but it has a bit of meaning to me.  I was two days away from starting college and then realized I was not prepared for it (mentally or financially) so I basically dropped out of college before I even began.  If I went to college the one I was going to was CMU.  Mizzou was my first choice, but I never had the grades for it, and CMU accepted me, so it was a easy decision.

In a small town of Fayette, MO, CMU has always been a team I've tried to follow.  Most Fall weekends I would check out if they won or not, but due to the Royals, I have seemed to forget about them.  I did catch a game on the internet earlier this Fall, albeit only scoring updates.  Today I am lucky enough to hear the game on the radio.  Nothing like last minute warning.

Packs and stacks

I was waiting for something in the mail today (which didn't arrive), so I waited until the last minute to write this.  My mail comes in the late afternoon so I usually have to wait for it. Anyways, its a good day, and tonight I have high hopes.

Today I thought I would show off some cards I got in the mail yesterday from a Listia win, but before I do, I thought I'd show a couple other cards off.  The local convenience store is slow in getting new cards, so I've bought a couple series 2 packs to finish off the box in hopes of getting update packs soon. The cards were pretty lackluster but found a couple I could keep.

This is a good Beltran for me since I don't seem to have a lot of his newer cards.  I don't like the Yankees but I collect Beltran, so it was one I needed.

The Duffy was one I got shortly after they came in stock at Just Commons.  As a matter of fact, I think all I need is the update cards,  It will still be good to keep in case I do make it to Fan Fest in January (or February).  I wrote an email to the Royals before the playoffs asking them about bringing the Caravan closer to Mid-Missouri, so if they do, I hope to get a few autographs that way.

OK, on to the Listia package.  It is all older cards, and I haven't been able to see if I have any, but I got them for a couple cards specifically.

The Terry Shumpert card is the main reason I got this.  I think I probably need all of them, and I like that the Kevin Appier card is an Electric Diamond card.  At just under 500 points, I think I got a good deal.

Mizzou Homecoming

I feel refreshed after last nights win by the Royals.  Since there is a night off from the World Series, I am stuck finding something to watch.  So its either Rehab Addict (I like home improvement shows), or Miami Hurricanes football.  I was a huge Canes fan in the late 90's and early 2000s.  Since then, I don't pay as much attention.

Anyways, in all the Royals excitement, I have neglected another team I avidly root for- Mizzou!  This weekend is Homecoming for the Missouri Tigers, and according to many, the University of Missouri started the Homecoming tradition.  I had been deciding if I wanted to sell programs at the game as I have the last few years, but I don't think I will.  I love selling programs, but I want to be ready for the Royals game and since I live 45 minutes from Columbia, there is no way I will make it back in time to see the game.  Luckily I have a friend who takes a lot of pictures so besides hearing the game (I don't get SEC Network where I'm at, but do have a DVR that can record the game at my mom's house), I will be able to see the atmosphere.

I thought today I would show off a few Mizzou related things I have.  While I have been a fan of the basketball team since around 1992 or 1993, its only been the last decade I've become a fan of the football team.  I must say though I have been in love with the school as long as I can remember.  I was born at the University Hospital.

My first experience of watching a game live was a birthday gift from my mom in 2002 to a basketball game.  I had been to a football game a few years earlier, but I actually worked it (I worked concession stand inside the basketball arena during the game, its a bit confusing).  As I mentioned I loved watching the basketball team, so I was so happy when I got to go.  I got to see Kareem Rush play among others and got to see a Tiger victory.

The bottom two tickets were to the Gymnastics team events.  I actually won these off the radio, and as you can see I didn't make it to the Cat Classic.  The match against Illinois was pretty fun, it was my first time actually watching Gymnastics at a level besides Olympics, and even then that was on TV.  I went with my sister, who was pretty reluctant to go at first, but afterwards she told me she really enjoyed it.  I can't remember if we won or not, but I think we did.

The only ticket in this batch I actually paid for was the top right one.  Even then, I might not have paid for it.  The spring scrimmage games are free with canned food donations, so I might have just gave food.  The spring games are always fun, this was the first one I went to, and I think I have only missed 1 or 2 since then.  I usually go with my best friend and the last few years we have even gone on the field after the game and meets some current and former players.  It is always fun and usually coincides with the team stores annual sale where if you get in fast enough you can get some cheap shirts and even old jerseys at a decent price.

These aren't all the games I've been to, but just a few.  Since I think 2011 I have have worked some games selling programs, so after I finish, usually around halftime, I can watch the rest of the game.  I usually walk around the stadium finding tickets and souvenirs and enjoy the fourth quarter.  Before then I would go to games my friend and I could find cheap tickets to (after a couple years of season tickets, my friend has gone back to this strategy which works out well).

2008 was the first year we went to games, and Nevada and Buffalo were 2 of the first games we went to.  What I remember about the Nevada game was their quarterback who I really liked and said I hoped he'd make it to the NFL.  The quarterback's name?  Colin Kaepernick.  Buffalo also had a player who made it to the NFL- James Starks.  Their coach was Turner Gill who a couple years later became the coach of Kansas, which didn't turn out so well.

The last two tickets are from Homecoming games.  The Texas game was fun because we spent the day in Columbia enjoying the parade and walking around the campus before the game.  The game was not so good as it was rainy and we got KILLED!  It was nice to see Blaine Gabbert and Colt McCoy face off though 41-7 I think was the final score.

The Iowa State game I actually worked.  It was a pretty good game, and I loved working it.  It was my first year, and made a good bonus that game.  It was nice talking to the fans and even the Cyclones fans too.  I must say most of the visiting team fans I have encountered have been very nice.

On the left are Tiger Tailgate passes which are handed out by the local radio stations.  They are free and given out a few days before the game.  Since we aren't big on tailgating, we opt to do this.  They serve food and drinks a couple hours before kickoff, so it saves us from buying food inside the stadium (unless of course we want Stadium food, I usually get a souvenir cup).  When I started program selling I didn't have time to do this, but earlier this year I went to a game and forgot how good it was.

The ticket on the right is a stub I found one day.  It was inside a book and what caught my eye was the date.  October 14th was my sister's birthday, she turned 23 back in 2000.  On the ticket is Justin Smith who has made quite a name for himself in the NFL, especially since joining the 49ers.

The only game I worked last year was the Homecoming game.  Again, I made good money, and even got to see the end of the game.  Sadly we lost on a missed field goal in overtime, but it was still a fun experience.  I'm just showing this to give you an idea of how they really love Homecoming.

This is a program from the only game I attended this year (so far).  I love buying programs because it gives you a snapshot of the game and a souvenir as well.  It was also one of the reasons I still enjoy selling them.  One day I will show you some of the inside contents including some of the ads (I like looking at ads too).

This is what the 2013 Spring Program looked like.  I couldn't find a program from this past spring's game, but they are nice to have.  They have bios of all the players and coaches and also the team history.  I'm not showing it tonight, but another good thing about having programs such as these and gameday ones are they are great for getting autographs.  I have a ton in this one, but I will show them off later in a new feature I will have on here.

Before I go I wanted to show a couple more pictures.  I screen printed these off Google Maps to give you more of a feel of the Stadium and the campus.  One day I will go to Columbia and take more pictures.

This is Hearnes Center which was home to the Basketball team for many years.  The ticket stub I posted earlier is from this Arena.  Today it is used for Wrestling, Gymnastics, and the court has been transformed into a Volleyball court.  Last year the basketball team celebrated the 1993-1994 team and played an exhibition game in the arena as well as had an autograph signing from former players.  This year due to upgrades at Mizzou Arena, one exhibition game will also be played at Hearnes again.  The cool thing is it will be coach Kim Anderson's first game as the new Mizzou coach.  He played on the very same court in the early 80's and was an assistant coach for many years under Norm Stewart at this very arena.

It is also used for other events such as the Show Me State Games and other special events.  It is also where the band prepares before football games, and where the event staff meet up before the game.  Those window on the right is where we head out each game two hours before the game starts.

Here is a shot of Faurot Field from Stadium Boulevard.  It has actually been modified since this screen shot, but is a good view.  In the very back is the top of Mizzou Arena.

This is one of my favorite events of a Mizzou football game.  It is called Tiger Walk and goes over Providence.  On the right side is where most of the practice facilities are and other Mizzou buildings.  Before each game, the players are bussed to this area on the right, and they walk across the bridge as they make their way to the Stadium and their locker rooms.  My friend and I try to go to this each time, and really is a fun event to see at least once.  When I go to the Kentucky game, I plan on going to Tiger Walk and take a lot of pictures (last time I was still learning the camera and didn't get any shots.

That will wrap it up for today, I'm sorry I wrote so much.  I tend to ramble on when given the chance, and since there was not a game tonight, I wasn't trying to post something quick.  Tomorrow will be back on the Royals, and Saturday will too.  I might throw in an extra Mizzou post on Saturday as well.
