I recently got a few baseball cards and it's been my first ones in a long time, maybe in over a year, so I thought I'd celebrate. While I was waiting for them to arrive I watched a documentary. It was called The Diamond King and was a documentary on Dick Perez. I will admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the Dick Perez Diamond King cards in Donruss, but I'm doing a movie challenge and I actually enjoyed this. As a result I am a big fan of him now, even if I don't necessarily enjoy the cards. However at the end of the documentary they played the Terry Cashman song Talkin' Baseball. Now it is a good song, but I actually enjoy The Simpsons version of it a bit more called Talkin' Softball. So I was thinking about if they did an updated version how it would go. So later on I will post some lyrics to a new version (with a bit of Royals bias to it). For now though I figured I would show some cards since, hey, I am still doing a card blog.
I don't really have many cards on a wishlist these days because honestly I don't even bother with my cards much. However I still look for good deals on Listia and stumbled on this which is something I've been eyeing for a few years. I don't know if I have any collect a books, but thought I might have a football one. Anyways, the Clemente baseball one will be a fine addition to my collection.
While on Listia I mainly search for books or movies, I still actively look for cards just because. By doing so I added a couple Royals cards which I would imagine are new additions to my collection because I'm not sure I have anything newer than 2022.
Michael Massey card was really cheap so that's why I got it. I have to admit I haven't watched or even followed much baseball this year. I know the Royals started off poor, had a hot streak and was one of the best team in baseball, then they plummeted and are now one of the worst teams in baseball. They called up Jac Castiglione (and I'm not even sure if that's his name). I could name maybe 5 players, 10 if I was lucky. Massey would not be one of the names. As odd as that is, I have probably had the chance to see more Royals games this year then the last 4 years combined, but I'm just not interested. I didn't even check out the All-Star game or the festivities.
One player I can name is Vinnie Pasquantino. He is nicknamed Pasquatch, and I've seen highlights of him hitting a home run, someone dressed as Bigfoot walks around Kauffman Stadium. A lot of my interest in the Royals fell when the owner, John Sherman, became hell-bent on moving the team from Kauffman to literally anywhere in the KC Metro. Made even more sickening to me was how after voters turned down the tax to fund new stadiums for the Royals and Chiefs, both he and Clark Hunt (Chiefs owner) explored other options including moving to Kansas. At least Hunt has shown some interest in keeping their current stadium, but a financial feud between Missouri and Kansas for fund billionaires getting new stadiums is not something I agree with. Even if it will bring in more revenue for Missouri (if they stay). Most of that revenue will be coming from Missouri citizens anyways so they are essentially paying double. Anyway not to rant too much, but I've gotten a bit tired of sports lately so its killed my interest in collecting cards. That's why I don't make as many posts, especially about cards.
Having said all that, they has been one player I've wanted a card of for at least 2-3 years and it's all in a name. LARS! oops, I mean...
NOOT!
If she was still around, my sister would be embarrassed right now. When she was a kid, her nickname was Noot. It wasn't like a name everybody called her, just us in the close family. After she passed I kept up with the Cardinals just because it was her favorite team. I'm not even sure how that happened but it was. So I remember a few years ago flipping through the channels and a Cardinals game was on, so since nothing else was on, I'll watch a bit. A few batter in and "Lars ****baar up to the plate." Odd, sounded like they said NOOTbar....
"Nootbar having a good season so far".... WHAT THE.... NOOT? You have my attention.
A few weeks later I heard he was doing quite well and tuned in again, and he stepped up to the plate.... "NOOOOOOT". No freaking way! The crowd is already behind him. I think my sister would have been so happy. It makes me think of all the times she had to go to St. Louis for chemo, and my mom and I was talking one day about if he was around back then. I would have totally tried to get in touch with him to see if he could have made a special visit to see her at the hospital one day while getting chemo. I think it would mean the world to her.
I also wonder in the back of my mind if this is her testing me. Maybe she know's my interest in baseball has waned and my not so great alliance with the Royals and she's trying to test me. Either way I have a Lars Nootbaar card (any would be fine with me), and I'm very happy. My next goal might be one day obtaining an autograph card. I won't try too hard because like I said, I haven't touched cards outside of these in months. At any rate, who knows, maybe this is the spark I needed.
Adding cards of Pasquatch and Nootbaar gave me a bit of hope that my collecting days aren't entirely done. Since they were also close by when I watched the Diamond King documentary they also made it into my updated lyrics to Talkin' Baseball. I styled it more after the Simpsons version, so its not very long.
Forget about the Bambino
The Royals have Pasquantino
Those voting against Witt for MVP got it wrong
Ohtani is playing both ways with the Dodgers
And Vlad is playing up in Rogers
While DeGrom is chugging right along
We're talking baseball.
Tatis in San Diego
Talking baseball
Alonso might be the next Canseco
Jazz Chisholm might need a nudge
Verlander doesn't want to budge
We're talking Lars Nootbaar
All Rise For The Judge
It's not the most creative, it took maybe 10 minutes tops and most of that was fact checking to see if Vlad was still on Toronto, if DeGrom was still in the majors, finding out who Alonso is, and if Aaron Judge was still as good as advertised.
I guess I'll wrap it up from here. I have non-card related stuff to show, but I'll save that maybe for the next post. I also have a couple more summer catalogs to digest as well from the internet archive, as well as probably a couple other posts. So with a heatwave coming I might be a bit more active on here. Thank you all for reading and if you leave a comment I will try to at least reply, I haven't been the best at that lately, and I'm sorry about that. So thanks for reading and have a great rest of the weekend and week. As for me, I'll be staying in as temps reach the mid 90's all week and most of the next 2-3 weeks. So I might work on a project or two, but will likely be catching up on some movies and rewatching old ones. If you are in the path of the heatwave, I hope you stay safe.

Looks like Massey is on the phone on that card. The old phone-in-the-batting-helmet trick.
ReplyDeleteI was going to mention that and forgot. I can't look at that card without thinking he has a phone in his helmet.
DeleteI stopped using Listia 7 or 8 years ago. As fast as the site seemed to be going downhill at the time, I'm really surprised that it's still around.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't like its used to be, but I have to admit I've gotten quite a bit of stuff from there for only spending $1 to verify a credit card (which I'm not sure why I had to). I still don't know how people can make a profit selling stuff on there.
DeleteA. I was a big fan of the Diamond Kings of the 80's. I supported the crowdfunding for the film (because I wanted the set of cards), but haven't watched the movie yet. I had tickets to an online viewing, but something came up.
ReplyDeleteB. I totally rooted for Noot during the WBC. I have a handful of his cards in my Japanese athlete collection, but I'm still chasing an autograph of his too.
C. Great job on that song!
Thank you, I didn't spend too long on the lyrics, but it was fun to get the creative juices flowing. The documentary was actually better than I thought it would be but then again I had no knowledge of it until I saw the option to watch it.
DeleteI hope you can find an autograph card of Noot sometime soon.
