Cleaning Up

A week or two ago I finally got some cards scanned that I've bought or found or won on Listia recently.  Now its time to show some off today and clear the folder up a bit.

Let's start with some more Pizza Cards.  I like pizza so to be honest, there was a decent chance I'd have bought pizza anyways, but when cards are involved, yeah, that's a big bonus.  The problem though is I prefer thin crust pizza and these are nothing but dough.  At least the ones I had.  I actually prefer a cheap cardboard pizza over something from say Dominos.  But I will try almost any kind and its been a while since I had a Walmart pizza, so it had some incentive.  I didn't pull any Royals, but at least I got a Mike Trout.  In some sick twisted way, I want to complete this set, and I'm not really a set builder.

Did I mention I like pizza?  One of these I did get in a breadsticks box.  However I didn't like them much at all.  They seemed really soggy and really greasy.  I'm not the most health conscious person, but I even knew it was too much.  My teeth didn't really appreciate it much either.

Again, no Royals, but at least I got some decent names, and the only non-Royal that I was seeking- Mr. Met.  If this is a big success, I could have seen them adding football cards in the fall, but didn't Topps lose its license for them?  Maybe they can work a deal with the other card companies and get the other sports in.

If I'm being really honest here, I actually like these Marketside cards more than the flagship Topps cards.  I'm sure I'm in the minority on that, but these are simple but not too plain, ad I think work really well.  I hope they were a success and hope they are back next year.  If they are though I think making it a 60 card set with two players from each team would be great.  Having the top player on the team and maybe the top rookie.  If no real standouts exist in one of the categories, make a team card or a mascot card.  I'd even step it up a bit more, make a four card pack and sell them for a buck, maybe even include a 50 cents off coupon for the pizza.

Since I didn't pull any Royals cards, I had these handy and scanned them.  I think I got these off Listia.  I don't seem to remember at the moment.  I'm sure the Appier and Sweeney cards I did.  I'm sure I did on the rest too.  I think a couple were bonus cards and might have had them already.  In any event, its new Royals cards for me, and now I need to update my checklists.  I haven't needed to and haven't had time to do so lately so that should get me back in the habit.

More Royals, and a Ruben Gotay as a Brave.  The top ones I think I also got on Listia, because they were cheap.  The bottom ones I got on there because I knew I didn't have them.  Before these, I think my oldest minor league card was 88 or 89.  One of these is 84 I think, and forgot the other one.  I need to add them to my lists, but then I have to write out all the ones I don't have.  I guess its time to get to work on that.

Here's a couple more Royals Listia wins.  The Hosmer I was 99.9% sure I didn't have, and I may be wrong on that now.  However its a really nice card and I got it cheap.  Then again if it wasn't cheap, I likely would have passed.  As for the Brett, its hard to believe I don't have all the junk wax Brett cards, but I don't.  I'm positive I have the Donruss version of this card, but assumed I don't have the Leaf one.  So when I got this for next to nothing, I was pretty hyped.

One I wasn't exactly hyped for was this one of Mark Quinn.  Nothing against The Mighty Quinn, but I don't really seek out game type cards.  This one was going for nothing so I bid and won.  I'm happy I did because it opens up possibilities and allows me to see who else was in the set.  I guess these aren't any worse than the US Playing Cards of the early 90s, so I can't complain.

I was going through a box of cards while moving and found quite a few former Mizzou guys.  I think though all of these are doubles, with possible exception to the Edelman and one of the Victor Bailey cards.  My next big project is sorting and making a list of all my Mizzou cards or players from Mizzou.  I've lagged a bit on it because doing the Royals bunch tired me out.  I figure I can start the Mizzou ones once football season starts since most are football anyways.

The Truman the Tiger card isn't a card, but a magnet.  I like it and its small enough to fit in with cards, so thats what I'll do.  Brock Olivio was a legend at Mizzou, but never did anything in the NFL (aside from being on screen as a Chiefs during the playoffs with his mouth wide open).  Brocky didn't have many NFL cards, in fact for the longest time I thought this was the only one.  Last year I found another and bought it.  I think he had 1-2 more but I haven't got them yet.  Maybe one day.

Rod Smith did not go to Mizzou.  He did go to Missouri Southern State in Joplin.  I don't know of many pros to come from there, but I still had to set these aside.  I've visited many campuses around the state, but that is one I can honestly say I haven't.  Then again, I've only been to Joplin twice maybe my whole life, so its not like I take frequent visits.  I don't really think I've been in downtown Joplin now that I think about it.  I believe once though I was asked if I could transfer to the Wendy's down there (as it was also part of a Pilot), but I passed.  The management from that Wendy's trained us when we opened and to be honest I didn't like them much and didn't think they were good managers.  In any event, I turned down the offer, and I don't regret it.  If I did take it though I had a couple friends down there and think I could have done fine, but at that point I was at Wendy's for 4 or 5 years and didn't want to work there much longer.  I think that Pilot store took a lot a damage during the Joplin tornado though.  I always wanted to go down there and look around but have never done it.  I felt really bad for all the people down there.

Okay, time for one last scan.  I mentioned the other day I found some Rams cards and didn't know what to do with them since they aren't around here anymore.  I did set some of the cards aside and here they are.

I got some heavy hitters here.  I loved that Victory set.  It is one I wouldn't be against collecting again one day.  That is a nice card of Bettis.  Another one of him, and a Marshall Faulk card with both still having the plastic on them.  I was in a debate on TCDB a while back if its okay to peel it off.  I'm of the mindset that you DO NOT peel the plastic off as (to me) it is part of the card.  Only unless its already peeling do you even consider it.  It is tempting but I keep them on whenever possible.

The Torry Holt is a #'erd card and its pretty nice.  The Marc Bulget was a different insert, so I pulled that aside too.  I had a few more Bulger cards than I thought.  I didn't have as many from Kurt Warner though.  I like this banner waving type card so I pulled it out too.  Lastly is a James Laurinaitis Kickoff rookie card.  I think the only reason I pulled it is because it would be a nice card to get signed if I ever tried to do a TTM autograph.

While I won't miss the Rams next year (or this year I guess), I will miss some of their players.  I hate that they moved even though I didn't root for them.  I just hope this doesn't reignite a relocation and expansion craze like in the 90s.  I already hear the Raiders have their eyes set on Vegas.  Though to be honest, I felt they should have looked harder at San Antonio.  Sure Texas doesn't need another team, but the team colors already match the Spurs, and being close to the Mexico border sure would give them a big fan base south of the border.  It also would be too bad to travel to Kansas City.  I mean None of the teams are real far away if they did move there.  Then again the NFL would probably try to realign again and shake things up.  Somehow I'd see the Chiefs going to the NFC West and the Seahawks going back to the AFC.

So that wraps it up for today.  Thanks so much for reading, and I'm starting to feel good again and having fun writing these daily.  I'm not saying I was burnt out, but I was running low on topics.  It might happen again soon, but for now I still have plenty to write about.  Have a great night!

    1. I've mentioned him a time or two on here. He is a Valentine baby just like myself. I agree, he has a very unfortunate name.

    1. I thought I pulled one of him but it doesn't look like it. If I do I will set it aside for you since I owe you some cards.
