Do I Even Collect This?

My local Walmart added some self checkout lanes recently and in the process, the trading card section was relocated.  After I finally found it, I was surprised to find they added some random clearance sections.  One of the boxes had 98 cents on it and so I looked through it to see what was in it.  I found a bunch of crap that I had zero interest in, but I also found within two trips 3 packs of cards.  It was the jumbo packs, each with 30 cards in them, so I figured that's worth it and grabbed them.  The problem was though, should I have done it?

I've mentioned I've wanted to tighten things up a bit and ease my focus away from non-sports unless I really liked the set, but I mean 98 cents a pack for 30 cards?  That's tough to passe up.

The set in question is from the movie from a couple years back called Guardians of the Galaxy.  I didn't hate the movie.... I didn't like the movie... I DIDN'T SEE THE MOVIE!  All I knew about it was former WWE wrestler Batista was in it.  Full disclaimer, I was never a fan of Batista, so that isn't really a selling point.  The selling point was IT WAS 98 CENTS A PACK!  Since I can't think of many movie sets going over 100 cards in the base set, getting 90 cards should put me close to completing the set, so I figured at least I'd have that going for me too.

So  I bought all three and while the cards look nice, I have no idea what is going on in the photos, nor do I really care.  I spotted Batista, and I think Michael Rooker, and that made me happy.  The set was larger than I thought, so I'm not as close to completing the set as I thought, but even getting some inserts I still think I did okay.  At best I can slow roll completing the set and maybe by then I will watch the movie and might have interest in it.  At worst I can make it a goal to add some cards to the set as a goal for next year.  Either way, I don't regret getting them,  I just don't get what's going on in the scenes.

I didn't pull any inserts aside from some blue border variations in each pack (labeled "retail") but I have no desire to ever make a blue border set, so that's fine.  As for the base set, according to the Trading Card Database, it's 135 cards and I'm currently about halfway there at 65 cards or 48.1% so I guess that's not too bad.  28 regular cards a pack and two blue borders, so with three packs I got about a pack of doubles, but I am okay with that.  I kind of wished I got about 60% done, but oh well.  Maybe I can find some more packs in future trips.

So since I know nothing about them, I'll just show off some cards, Besides the blue borders, I almost randomly picked the other cards.

So judge for yourself if you think I did good.  I'll be honest the design is really nice and one of the better movie card sets I've seen.  That really helps me finding motivation in working on the set.  The actual photos used are nice too, so I give them credit for that as well.  It's just a movie I really have no knowledge of.  I heard about it and remember when it came out, I just didn't have an interest in it, and after looking at these cards, still have no interest in it.

That will wrap it up for today, its later than I thought and I'm hoping to sleep good tonight to gear up for college football tomorrow.  Mizzou starts at 11 AM against Bob Walk The Plank's team, aka, the Mountaineers of West Virginia.  I really don't know what to expect from Mizzou this year, so we'll see how they do.  I'll be listening on the radio because I like their announcers but also I don't get FS1 which is covering the game.  If you have a team playing tomorrow, then good luck, I hope to watch as many games as I can, which with the channels I have is about 4 games.  Thanks for reading and have a good night.

  1. Just go and rent the movie, would you? Far more entertaining than anything Marvel has put out this year.

  2. People still rent movies?

I'm just kidding. I might check it out one day, I mean it did take me 34 years (from when I was born) to watch the Star Wars movies, so I'll get around to it before then I imagine.

  3. The trick is to trade them for something you really want. That way, you get something you DO collect and are only three bucks invested!

  4. I thought about that, but it has grown on me some and I might work to complete the set.
