Big Bag O'Cards- Royals, Cardinals, and Moving Cards

It's 4-0 Tampa leads the Royals, so let's get into the blog.  Today I'll showcase some Royals cards as well as the rest of the Cardinals cards and even some more cards.  Let's dig in.

A double dose of Jose DeJesus which I might need and another 1990 Topps of Steve Farr.  Not a bad start.   I really like the Storm Davis card, which I can never say a bad thing about 92 Donruss.  The same could say almost the same thing for the Collector's Choice, which is a nice card of Jose Lind.  The Bo Jackson and Kirby Puckett card was one I needed until a few months ago but by now I think I have it.  I do now at least.  Finally is a couple George Brett cards, one being a 1990 Donruss which I was also seeking at one point, and the other might be a new to me more recent one.  I've seen the card many times but not sure if I actually have it.  Once I finish all these posts on this bag I will update my Royals collection and my other ones too and see what I've added.

So overall, not a bad mix of Royals cards, especially since these came from the other side of the state.  I really didn't expect many Royals and overall I think I got 10 or so, and that works for me.

The team with the most cards in the bag obviously is the Cardinals.  I've shown you some sets already, and I had a ton more to show, but I picked a few out to showcase.  If I showed every card from the bag it would be the end of August before I could move on.

How Swell, a Dizzy Dean card!  It's not a set I would put on my most wanted list, but I have wanted some of the cards from Swell, and this Dizzy Dean card is a perfect way to start.  Also included is another Mark Whiten card, and after this bag, I'm really considering starting a PC of him.  All because I remember his 4 home run game.  Next is a pair of Lee Smith cards, and while I may not remember any specific moment of his career, he would still make a great PC candidate and I've said many times he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Next is a pair of Todd Zeile cards.  Thanks to this bag, I realized he had a career outside of St. Louis.  I knew he played for other teams, but couldn't remember who.  I thought maybe the Mets, but it just wasn't clicking.  I usually liked him, and you'll see in a future post or two what other teams he played for if you're like me and don't remember.

Next is a pair of Brian Jordan cards, one of which is possibly my favorite among all of tonight's cards.  Rarely do you see an outfielder in the catchers position, so this makes for a very cool card.  What I remember most about Brian Jordan is that he was a two sport star.  If memory serves me right he played for the Falcons as well.  While I understand the stress it takes on the body I really would love to see someone current as a duel sport star.  I don't mean in a gimmick or anything, I mean a legit player.  That's why I did wish Russel Wilson got a shot to play for the Rangers.  That's why I wasn't too upset the Mariners drafted Ken Griffey Jr.'s son in the Draft (despite Trey never playing baseball, but hey, if he's a natural athlete like his dad I'm sure he'd pick it up quick).  Even if it was for a year I would like it.  The problem now is that athletes make so much that owner's put so many restrictions on them that I doubt we'd ever see it happen again.

If you had me name a Cardinal's player from the early 90's not named Ozzie Smith, I'm sure Tom Pagnozzi would be one of my first choices (or  Ray Lankford).  I liked Pagnozzi and thought he deserved more credit then he got.  I like the Bowman card because I liked the black helmets the Cards would wear on occasion.  Next is a Mark McGwire card I've never seen.  The previous owner must have thought highly of the card as it was one of maybe 3 cards that was in a penny sleeve.  Not a big McGwire fan, but it is a nice card so I'll add it to my collection.  The team card I didn't plan to place on the scanner upside down, but it is from a set that I really liked, the 2001 set.  I didn't get too many cards from the set, but it was a set I wish I would have collected more.  Same goes for the 2002 set as well.

The bottom row showcases the previous owners most likely favorite player.  Besides the rookie, two other Adam Wainwright cards were sleeved as well.  I'm not real high on Waino but I see why so many Cardinals fans like him.  I don't think I ever had his rookie, so that was a nice one to see.  I'm sure I had the Upper Deck on the far left, but with this many new cards of his, I might start a PC and I'll check to see if I do have it.  I know I don't have the Signature Stars card because the first ones I got was from a contest last year and were Royals cards. Its a nice set, so it was pretty cool to get.  Lastly is a Sports Illustrated for Kids card and while I remember the design, I know I don't have the card.  By the time I subscribed to SI For Kids they already had a new card design.  I do have a similar looking card from this era of Chase Daniel, so if I had to guess this was probably from 2009 or so.  Maybe a little later.

A few more Cardinals, from a variety of brands.  The Cris Carpenter while not a Cardinals card I bunched in with them because he was a former Cardinal.  I thought it was odd that in the last 2 decades St. Louis had had two pitchers with the same name, although this one has omitted the "H" from his first name.  I remember a little about Brian Barber but not much.  I rarely had Bowman's in the 90's so this is new to me.  Not new to me is the 91 Topps of Milt Thompson.  I liked the photo so I included it.  The final Cardinals cards are from Allen Watson.  He's another guy I liked so it was nice to pull him.  I liked the Topps design from I think it was 1995 so it worked out good.   The 1992 Score card doesn't look familiar so it might be new to me.

The rest of the cards are a random mix of cards, but some good names. The highlight is the Ricky Henderson, who while I may not be his biggest fan, its still a great card to have.  Other names include Edgar Martinez, J.T. Snow, Fred McGriff, and Henry Rodriguez.  All names I remember from my childhood.

Next is a couple interesting cards.  My sister mentioned a couple credit card looking cards, and it intrigued me.  I have a gold one of Greg Maddux so I was interested.  When I got them I realized they were slightly different than the one I have.  These resembled more of an actual trading card with sharp edges.  Mine feels more like plastic if I remember and has round corners.  I still like these though so they were highlights of the bag.

Next is some team cards, I really liked these, especially the Marlins and Rangers ones.  I wouldn't mind seeing newer sets featuring cards like these.  Speaking of newer cards, here is a newer release of Joey Bats.  Not a bad card.  Lastly is a couple more 90's staples, Tim Wakefield and Gary Sheffield.  Not bad at all.

How about a batch of newness?  I'm a bit surprised to see a Yu Darvish rookie card included but it is and I'm glad it to add it to my PC.  Also a rookie of Brett Pill and Matt Moore which was nice to see.  It was also nice to see Clayton Kershaw and and Josh Reddick and a former Royals in Alberto Callaspo.  It does surprise me to see newer cards mixed in with the older cards, but I'm not complaining.

Anyways let's get back to the oldies but goodies for the last batch.

Sportflix cards don't translate well into scans but I had to include them.  The names are a bit hard to make out but I'll try to remember.  There is Rob Dibble, David McCarty, Pat Hentgen, Dave Hollins, Robin Ventura, and Chad Curtis.  The Curtis card looks kind of cool with the way it scanned.  Also included was Hubie Brooks which wasfrom an 80's set.  Overall it is fun to see these cards again, I just wish I pulled a name I collected but oh well, I can't complain at all.

So that wraps it up for tonight.  On a night in which I turned off the Royals game and turned on Smokey and the Bandit, I think I showed a good batch of cards.  Speaking of Smokey, on Saturday there is a documentary on CMT about the movie, which I plan to watch.  I'm a big Burt Reynolds fan so I actually have it written down to remind me to watch it, that is if I'm at home.  Thanks everyone for reading and hope everyone has a good night.

    1. Yeah, I'm really surprised they haven't tried to do that again. Even insert inserts that would include a random balance to use on Bunt cards or whatever their digital cards are. It could be a nice draw.

  2. Nice group of cards.

I half-heartedly followed Whiten during his career. The only time I ever saw him was if his team was playing Montreal or Toronto. It's odd, considering he was part of the price for the rental of Tom Candiotti by the Jays.

The Sportflics cards I can honestly say I'm not a fan of..

    1. I think the Sportflics were real hit or miss, but I like that they were different. I wouldn't mind a short comeback of them for a couple years.
