El hombre , el mito , las tarjetas (Thanks Google Translate!)

I've been wanting to write this post for a while, but with the insanity of the Royals, I was so caught up in it.  Then I was going to do it last week, but it was bad timing since it was the Royals opponent, so I waited.

Now I can finally post an oddball assortment of Albert Pujols cards I won on Listia.  I won these cards for 256 points.  When I bid on them, I didn't think much beyond, these are some Pujols cards I don't have.  While I will never bea Cardinals fan, there have been many players I liked on their team.  That's what happens when its the only team you get to see for over 2 decades.  I've always liked El Hombre, even if I feel he is overpaid (though I also think 99% of pro athletes are overpaid).  The title is in reference to his nickname El Hombre.  He actually once said he didn't want to be called that because he had so much respect for Stan Musial.  The fact I had to use Google Translate is a testament that I didn't learn crap in two years of Spanish class (I did know El Hombre meant The man though).

Anyways, lets look at the haul.

We begin with the least oddballs of the set.  The card on the left is from the 2013 Triple Play set.  I really wish Panini would have made these more like the 90's version of Triple Play.  This card is interesting though because even though it says Los Angeles on the side, just looking at the "picture" (I guess caricature is better fitting) some could confuse this for a Cardinals card.  Let me just say, I didn't buy this lot for this card.

Next is a Team Leaders card with Chris Carpenter.  I'm not too fond with cards with multiple players on the card, but at least they are on the same team.  This is a nice look card that I didn't have, but again, I don't add too many multi-player cards to a PC.

The next card caught my eye when I saw this auction.  I looked it up (and sadly already forgot) what the card is, and I liked it.  It is a mini card, but one I didn't have, so combining it with the other cards in the listing, I thought it was well worth the price.


Next is a Kansas City Life Insurance Company card.  I didn't even realize until after I got these cards that most were oddball/promo cards.  This one is oversized.  It looks a little plain, but I like it.  Even though it has minimal stats, it still has a nice back side of the card too.  I have always been a sucker for these types of cards, though I don't own too many.  I do have some Royals cards from the mid-90's I should show off one day.

These next two cards are probably my favorites of the bunch.  On the left is a 2010 DAV card.  DAV is short for Disabled American Veterans, and was a team giveaway from what I gathered.  I honestly never heard of these before I got them, and I didn't even know it was a promo set just looking  at the auction.  It just looked pretty cool.  After I got it I looked it up, and most people have details about the minor league series DAV had that year, but not much on the Major League cards.  I did more digging, and can't find all the cards in the set, so if anyone has any information let me know (people on Trading Card Database may have noticed I started a thread on the topic).  It is a little sad that just from this design and having approval from MLB and the MLBPA these cards look better than the Panini cards.

Next to it is another card I'd never seen before I got it.  I didn't dig deep into the card, but this is another card that gives Panini a run for its money.  I'm can't remember Pujols playing Third Base, but then again, as I get older, sometimes I forget Alex Gordon played Third Base.  I might see if these Fox Sports Net did cards for other teams, and might try to get more.

The backs of the cards are a bit wordy, but you come to expect it from promotional cards.  I like the DAV back because it discusses the organization and gives a visual.  I went to their website to see if I could order some of the cards, but I couldn't find any links.  I think people would buy them if they were available.

The Fox Sports card is older than I thought.  It is from his second season, and nicely puts all kinds of nuggets of info from his rookie year.  I really like the background on the back, especially since it shows Old Busch Stadium and the top of the St. Louis Arch.

The final card doesn't look too special.  I think I have that Heritage card... wait a minute, these are all attached.  IS THIS AN UNCUT SHEET?

I looked at the back, and it looks like a promo sheet.  I looked it up on the DB, and they made a few promo sheets for the set.  This is so cool.  When the cards arrived initially thought the seller just threw in a couple extra cards, but as I pulled it out of the 9 page sheet, I noticed it was one card.  The seller had to cut the sheet to accommodate the card.  This will be a nice oddball to add to my collection for sure.

So that wraps it up for today.  I hope you enjoyed the cards as much as I enjoyed showcasing them.  The ALCS begins Friday, so the next few posts will likely be Royal related (as it should be hence the name of my blog), but I did finish some cards I created from the ALDS series I will show off before the series begins.  With the final four teams set, there is a chance of an I-70 series, and I'm not sure I want to see it.  I'm not sure living in the middle of the two teams (I live 100 miles from KC, and about 160 miles from St. Louis) is a great idea.  Cardinals fans outrank the Royals fans in these parts 3 to 1, so all I will hear about is Don Denkinger for the next few weeks.  Which I will post my thoughts on that in a future post.  I hope it doesn't come to that though.  From here on out though, I hope the AL team wins it all, since the Giants and Cardinals have both won recently.
